DeviceLogics acquired DR DOS from the Canopy Group, a Utah technology venture group, and has plans to release in Spring 2003 of an 8.0 version of DOS, bringing it up-to-date with core embedded functionality to include a TCP/IP stack, FAT 32 device drivers and other upgrades. DR-DOS originated in 1987 at Digital Research, Inc.; was then acquired by Novell in the early 90s. In 1996, DR-DOS was acquired by Caldera, Inc., the same company that sued and settled out-of-court with Microsoft Corporation over DOS-related anti-trust allegations; in 1998, it was spun out to Lineo, Inc. (a Canopy company) where it underwent enhancements targeted at the embedded market and, in October 2002, was acquired by DeviceLogics, Inc. DeviceLogics, Inc. was founded by Bryan Sparks, Bryce Burns and Troy Tribe for the advancement of DOS as an embedded solution. OpenGEM 2.0.0 is the latest OpenGEM release. You can get it for free by going to the OpenGEM downloads page. OpenGEM 2.0.0 works with all version of DOS after 3.3 (MS DOS, DR DOS, REAL/32, etc.). OpenGEM 2.1.0 will be out on the 6th of June 2003, and will be another little leap towards a complete GUI distribution for DOS. The fonts and printer drivers will be expanding, the GEM documentation will start to increase its presence, and there will be many little tweaks to tidy up the way OpenGEM works. The OpenGEM FAQ is up and has full information and installation details for OpenGEM. Special thanks go to Shane M. Coughlan in the UK for spearheading OpenGEM development. Shane is focused on getting OpenGEM running on as many systems as possible, and promoting it. It is a pretty neat, free GUI, and has a lot of potential uses - including for new types of embedded devices. Development is progressing well and ports are in progress for other languages including German, Russian, Spanish, and Chinese. If you are able to lend a hand (be it with programming, documentation or spreading the word), please let Shane know by contacting him at shane_coughlan@hotmail.com. You may also participate in the GEM Forum via email at Gem-Dev@Simpits.Org and GEM Annoucements at gem-announce-subscribe@egroups.com. A series of net utilities is also contemplated for GEM which would include: NSLookup, Ping, Traceroute, Telnet, FTP, HTTP support and more. |
